Q: What exactly is the Professional Master's Degree Program in Applied Science and Business?

A: The Professional Master's Degree Program in Applied Science and Business (PMDP) is a unique and innovative degree program that specifically prepares students for scientific careers in industry, or for professional careers in science-based enterprises that delve into marketing, business development, technology transfer, intellectual property law, public policy, and many other fields. It is strategically designed to provide students with excellent science, business, and professional skills to give them an edge in industry. Students graduate with an understanding of how scientific research and innovation is carried out in industry, the science behind industrial enterprises, and the connection between science and business in industry as it relates to the bottom-line of a particular organization or company.

Q: What is the difference between the PMDP and a traditional Master's of Science?

A: A traditional MS is focused on the preparation for a PhD, and ultimately a career in academia. The PMDP is specifically geared towards preparing students for careers in industry. To meet this goal, the PMDP includes various components. In addition to the science classes, students take business courses, complete an internship, attend an Industrial Colloquium Series, and complete a final project which ideally incorporates both the science side and professional side of the degree program.

Q: What sets our Professional Master's Degree Program apart from others?

A:

Q: What is the difference between this degree program and an MBA?

A:

Q: Is this a watered down master's of science?

A: No! The PMDP is not watered down at all. The Program is just as scientifically-rigorous as a traditional MS. The science side of the PMDP, the most important part of the Program, has not been compromised to prepare students for scientific careers in industry.

Q: Can I go on for a PhD after receiving my Professional Master's Degree?

A:Yes. While the PMDP is geared towards industry, it is still applicable to academia, because it is, after all, a Master's of Science. So it is still possible for you to continue on for your PhD after upon completion of the PMDP.

Q:What types of jobs are available to graduates of the PMDP?

A: The types of jobs available to graduates are varied and depend upon your interests and field of study. Generally, students have found lucrative employment in companies and organizations that value their scientific and business skills. Some students have sought employment in more technical arenas, such as working in research in a private company or government lab, where others have found exciting jobs that are more management in scope. Many of our students have found permanent employment in the same organizations for which they interned. To see a list of companies for which our graduates work and jobs our graduates have landed, visit the Alumni page. You will find that employees are extremely excitied to have our uniquely educated employees in their ranks, and this degree program can only open doors for you! You can read about some of our graduates in published articles, and certainly don't take our word for it - check out what industry reps are saying about our students in our Endorsements page.

Q: What financial aid opportunities do you offer?

A: You should think about the Professional Master's Degree Program rather like an MBA - a great investment in your future! While at this time it is not possible for us to offer the same packages of financial aid that are usually available to doctoral students, the Professional Master's Degree Program will work to help you find financial aid in the form various tuition waivers. Graduate assistantships and teaching assistantships may also be available. If you are from an under-represented group you may also be able to draw on additional sources of financial aid. For more information about financial aid, please contact Alaina Levine (alaina@u.arizona.edu). There are also various tuition and registration fee waivers offered by the Graduate College. Please visit the Graduate College's Financial Resources page for more info. Hispanic students are eligible to apply for scholarships in the form of tuition waivers offered by the UA Hispanic Alumni Association.

Q: What will be the official name of my degree?

A: The degree name depends upon the track:

  • Applied and Industrial Physics: Master's of Science in Applied Physics (MSAP) with a major in Applied and Industrial Physics

  • Applied Biosciences: Master's of Science in Bioscience (MSB) with a major in Applied Biosciences

  • Mathematical Sciences: Master's of Science in Mathematical Sciences (MSM)

In addition to their diploma, students receive a certificate upon completion of the Program that is signed by the Deans of the College of Science and the Eller College of Management and certifies the student's completion of the requirements of the Professional Master's Degree Program.

Q: Can I apply for Spring Admission?

A: No, admission to the Professional Master’s Degree Program is for the Fall semester only.

Q: Can I get course credit and get paid for an internship at the same time?

Q: When should I start looking for an internship?

A: Now! The sooner you start looking for an internship the better. Most large companies who have formal internship programs set a deadline for submitting applications or resumes for their summer internship opportunities in the late fall. So if you start researching companies or fields or industries that are of interest to you for your internship right now, or at least in the early fall of your first year, it is better for you. One student started researching and contacting companies the summer before her first semester and landed an internship even before the fall semester began. The bottom-line is it is never too early to start looking for an internship.
